Complain and ye shall receive

Monday afternoon, I asked the people in the nextdoor recruitment/personnel company about if they knew someone around here who could be interested in doing some proofing and language quality jobs.

Yesterday, I complained here about the tediousness of doing proofing and language quality of your own texts.

Today, a journalist who just got notice from her newspaper walked up to the office hotel for some networking and possible leads - and she loves doing language quality work!

AKICILJ: Backup solutions

I've been active as a freelance translator for close to a year now, and it's way overdue to think about backup and archiving.

What I have is:

1 basic PC with Windows Vista SP1 Business
1 MacBook with Mac OS X 10.5 (due for upgrade to 10.6)

Both are networked in the office, using an (for practical purposes) unsecured network. Occasionally, I work with restricted stuff for paranoid customers, and creating my own little physical subnet will probably be frowned upon. Right now I mostly use a memory stick to move files between the computers (it's easier and more secure than opening up file sharing).

Other than some basic security, I want it to be as hassle-free and simple as possible. A single solution for both computers would be a big plus. The data volume is modest - 500 GB would probably last me for a year, 1 TB for the foreseeable future. Low noise levels is very desirable.

The main questions are:

Are the built-in backup tools up to snuff? (The reports about Time Machine I've read are favourable, but I don't know about the Windows side.)

What hardware can be recommended?

Travelouge, part N of N

All of us have been busy vacationing for the last two weeks. First ten days with thette's parents in Boden, with plenty of excursions around northern Sweden, among them Storforsen, and Hulda got to spend a lot of time with her cousins (translation: they lived with us).

We flew back to Stockholm Wednesday, and Thursday and Saturday was mostly spent prepping for Lars-Olov's 80th birthday (Lars-Olov is the Swedish BNF, and was the FGoH of Worldcon 2004). We managed to visit the amusement park Gröna Lund to Hulda's delight on the Friday, and Aquaria on Sunday, before it was time for Lars-Olov's party, which was a roaring success. The surprise of the evening was when teroyks turned up.

Now thette is off with part of the luggage to meet uistic, and Hulda and I will soon follow suit.
Aplakonen, and Hulda's smart

I'm probably a bad person for not mentioning this before here, but the planning for Aplakonen continues. The last few days brought several fans being interested, and I hope we can get a few more to attend. Beer, whiskies and relaxing will be the high points, with smoffing thrown in. The really nice part is that our GoH – Glenn Petersen – gets married just a few days before, and what better way to start on a honeymoon than as the GoH at a nice con?

I had been having some serious doubts earlier, but after Alcocon in Gothenburg I decided the only real way forward was, well, forward.

Hulda's growing smarter every day. When we came home from daycare she noted a small white leaf lying on the ground outside our door. She picked it up, examined it, and pronounced it must have blown here from somewhere. Then she looked around, and noted a tree with white leaves about ten meters away (I think it's a cherry, but I'm not sure), and said it must have blown from there.

Job-wise has been all right March and April, but the big job I expected during May was delayed to June (at least I got some prior warning, and was expecting some delays anyway). I've got a job lined up, but it's very long-term and not that well-paying.

Advantages to small-town life

Day before yesterday (ie Thursday) we visited the nearby appliance store just before closing time, to buy a new washing machine and dryer (the ones in the house when we bought it were quite old and tired - especially the dryer was ancient). They had a nice sale on decent Whirlpool machines, and we enquired into delivery, installation and handling of the old machines.

The guy in the store said, almost apologetically, that he had to make the delivery Friday mid-morning, otherwise we had to wait until Monday. In Stockholm, we had to wait over a week for delivery.
